Interstallar GPS system ... something out of Star Trek

Someone's come up with a system to pin-point your location in the galaxy similar to the GPS system we have today. The signals from 4 pulsars form a natural GPS system that could locate any object in the galaxy to within a meter.
This would be handy when we develop warp drive to help keep us from flying into random planets in the way.

F-35 makes for easy fighter combats
This is where all the US Department of Defense budget goes to.
Its pretty amazing stuff. The "Distributed Aperture System" allows the pilot to have 360 degree view of the battlefield. Best part I like is it can detect planes sneaking up to you and all the F-35 pilot does is shoot a missile (while flying away) and the missile will fly around to hit the target... how unfair is THAT!
Give it another 20 years and we'll see some of this technology in cars or something :D

Wolfram Alpha launched

A new research search engine ("knowledge engine") has just been launched. Its called "Wolfram Alpha" and its meant to be the "Google" for science and research....give it a whirl and learn something new today.
Apparently Melbourne's population is 3.73m.
Note that Google announced that they will be launching a similar search engine later this year!

Installing Windows 7 on your Mac

One of the nice things about having a Mac is that you can use Windows and not feel dependent on the buggy, ugly looking OS. You can run Windows in dual-boot mode via Apple Boot Camp, or even better virtualise it straight inside OSX using Fusion or Parallel.
Microsoft has just release Windows 7 Release Candidate 1. This meants its less buggy than Beta, but not ready for commercial release. The upside is, its free for use till Mar 2010 when it will start shutting down your machine every 2 hours. All indications is that Windows 7 is the OS Vista should have been...rather than the annoying anti-user Vista.
Here is a guide to getting it up and running on your Mac.
Gotta love the packaged drivers from Apple to help get your Windows environment going.
Talk about playing nice...

Are Apple laptops better than PCs? Well consumers think so!

The Macbook tops the latest Consumer Report in all three notebook categories: 13-inch machines, 14-inch to 16-inch laptops, and 17-inch models.
Despite the lower cost of PCs, the Macbooks won over. Apple dominated the 13-inch category with its unibody Macbook coming first, followed by Macbook Air and the white polycarbonate Macbook. While the 17-inch MacBook Pro got the highest rating of any notebook reviewed by Consumer Reports, scoring 80 points out of the magazine’s 100 point scale!
Keeping track of the economy

Everyone is aware of the Global Financial Crisis. So what better way to track this monumental event than check out the US Govt. site Recovery.gov. Lots of graphs on the where and how money is being spent. If you're into the details here are a couple of other sites to track....
Beware the deluge of statistics and data on the economy.
If you can make sense of all of it and what it all means you'd probably be the first!

DSLR one day poop-cam the next

Wildlife photography is tough. Distance and range is a problem resulting in HUGE cameras. The guy in this picture is an extreme example, but you get the idea.
So instead of getting bigger DSLR cameras and camouflage, the experts have turned to poop-cam. Disguising cameras as elephant dung has allowed the capture of some amazing photos of lions in the Masai Mara Africa.

Spot review: Zero Gravity RC
Ok so I got one of these from a "special of the day" site for my nephew - who is into cars. Before it arrived there was also a bit of debate on how this thing actually worked. So here's the spot review.
The package:
The package comes with a remote control (IR) and car. There are 3 channels to use on the remote, so you can race up to 3 cars. The 6xAA batteries are not included so be prepared to fork out 1/3 the cost of the package just for batteries!
How it works:
It is worth explaining here that the car is not really a car in the normal sense. The wheels are fixed and decorative only. It is really more of a helicopter / car hovercraft. The fan / blades are housed inside the light weight plastic body.
When switched to "Wall" mode, the blades spin. The car is held in place against the wall and/or ceiling by the vacuum created under the skirts of the car. The car turns by spinning, so it doesn't drive like a car.
The cool part is that when you move the car forward the blue LED headlights light up. When reversing the back LED backlighyts light up!!
Overall:
For $20 AUD it was a good buy. Nephew was duly impressed by the demo. However parental restrictions due to concerns over markings on the walls meant that the car can only operate in certain houses.
4 / 5 STARS - RECOMMENDED

Living Colours!
Philips' Living Colour light is an amazing blend of technology and lighting. Never knew lighting could be this exciting. Very cool!
Its so cool in fact I got one of these at home now.
Couple of features I recently discovered about the light is you can put it into auto colour changing mode. Also the remote uses RF so you don't need to point at the light. You can also sync up to 6 different lights to the same remote...synchronised light changing...how cool is that!
